2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Final Evaluation- Question 1

The music videos we researched as our real media texts were:

·         Peter Kay’s animated All Star band

We were going to do intertextuality based around the fact that ‘Accidentally in love’ is in the Shrek 2 film but we decided that it would be too hard and there would have been copyright issues. Peter Kay’s video is an example of the use of animated characters which links with Shrek being an animated character.

·         Smash mouth- All Star and I’m a believer

These videos and ours share the same format i.e. scenes of the band playing/ singing the songs mixed in with scenes showing the songs narrative. It’s been done before and it works and we have reuses that format. The songs narratives from the Smash mouth All Star video and I’m a believer shows us comical elements and we have tried to emulate this with the scenes from our songs narrative. I think that there is a very strong and coherent relationship between the narrative and the performance of the song in our music video, for example when they play the drums and guitar and sing they show their emotions and this links with the way they feel about the girl (Steve Archer’s theory).

·         Angels and airwaves- call to arms

This video has very loose narrative. In the end our narrative was more structured and we used the format from the smash mouth videos.

·         Manic street preachers- your love alone

With this video we were looking for ideas for shots to use in our video. We used a few mid shot and quite a lot of close ups in a small enclosed space. We have taken some of the ideas for camera angles such as the close up side shot of the lead singer.

On the surface we didn’t think much of our album song names but we found that they had a much heavier meaning than we thought they did.

 

On the whole we decided to develop the conventions of our genre because we felt that any alternative that we could have come up with wouldn’t of created as good as brand image than if we had stuck to the conventions.

For question 1 you're going to need to be far more specific. Of the videos you listed as influences can you pick out elements which you've copied? For example you've tried to emulate the comical elements from Smash Mouth (as well as the performance element), the use of a loose narrative from Angels and Airwaves etc. Obviously you cannot just say that, you'll need to compare the exact elements you've copied.

For question 2 again you're going to need far more detail. Look back over the notes you took when Mrs Somell taught this question, have you done any of the things she listed.

Finally what format are your responses going to take. Remember they cannot simply be written answers.

Evaluation

First Draft Evaluation

On friday last week, we handed in our first draft of our music video. We filled in the gaps in our filming with drawings of our planned shots, because we knew from earlier in the week we couldn't film. There was a major limitation in iMovie though, because when we uploaded the photos, we could only have them as one second, two seconds and three seconds (and so forth) in terms of duration, so it was hard to be accurate.

Also it became clear that we need to have a re-think on the ending sequence for our video, as we were a bit short on shots. We should be able to sort it out by just adding in more shots, rather than changing the actual narrative though.

Filming- Day Three Evaluation

Todays filming was a massive success thankfully, compared to our previous amounts of filming. We have managed to do the vast majority of the outdoor footage, with the exception of the giving the flowers sequence near the start of the video, as ran out of time. The last bit of filming we need to complete is the closing sequence, as in when the band have finally won over the girl.

We filmed in locations through Narborough and Littlethorpe today, and tried to keep each location in a well lit area, and tried to keep some blue sky showing in the shots to add to our mise-en-scene. This wasn't always possible however, due to obstructions, be it trees or walls. We also did our best to keep the shots as mid or close ups, to stick with the conventions of music videos. Our shots in general I'm quite pleased with, but there are certain bits I'd like to refilm though. My own part of the performance for example, I'd like to redo before the final draft, but for a first draft, its more than sufficent.

When Jack and Alison had gone, we decided to do some extra footage to waht we had planned, and quickly did some planning to include some performance shots of Paul on the drums. We had already filmed Jack on the guitar, but we didn't have any drums until Catherine managed to get some for us to use. This was quite a challenge for Paul, as he has no drumming experience, so we found a video on YouTube for him to get an idea off, and then we just did short 5 second bursts of him doing certain bits of the song, as it was too hard to do it all in one go.

Filming- Day Two Evaluation

Today, whilst the weather was decent and only Catherine and I were free, we figured it would be best to do the performance shots for our video. After much debate, we decided collectively that it would be best to one continuous shot of myself walking slowly fowards lip syncing the song. Then we can just cut the bits out of that shot thst we actually want.

We found a spot where the sunlight was fairly prominent, so we weren't in the shade (which wouldn't match our mise-en-scene). Then it was simply a case of filming it. After watching the footage back a couple of times, we have a lot of useable footage, but on reflection there are parts I'd like to retry, where the camera was slightly off-centre. In fairness to Catherine, it was very difficult for her to walk backwards without guidance and focus on keeping the camera in the right place.

Filming- Day One Evaluation

Yesterday, the Met Office weather forecast site said it was supposed to be mianly sunny, but actually it was cloudy and it kept raining, so we were forced to do some of the indoor shots instead of those we had originally planned. The shots that we decided to do were basically the opening sequence of the video, which consisted of the three male characters waking up and then getting ready to leave their respective houses.

Feedback from our Pitch/ Evaluation

People said:

• Our idea needs a unique selling point e.g. the chase of the relationship.
• Avoid boring repetitiveness.
• Avoid copyright.
• Intertextuality using shrek.
• Put humour into it. 
• Must make people want to watch it.

Evaluation

I think that we were given back good feedback.We will take onboard what everyone has said especially to avoid boring repetitiveness. We learnt from the feedback that it would be best to have more of a clear narrative than having repetitiveness.
